There are three places in Paul’s epistles that he lists spiritual gifts given to the body of Christ. There are other places where he tells us when they will go away.
These spiritual gifts were given before the word of God was completed, and their stated purpose was to perfect the saints, do the work of the ministry, and edify the body of Christ.
The last book that Paul wrote, as he is closing the canon of scripture, he writes: “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.” All of the things that the spiritual gifts were to accomplish before scripture was complete could now be accomplished by the word of God, and the gifts passes away.
Today our greatest gift is the local church, which is to work as the pillar and ground of the truth.
