1 John 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
How does one see right division in this verse? Quite simply by what must be believed on to obtain eternal life. It is apparent throughout the Gospels, early Acts and the book of I John that belief on the NAME of the SON OF GOD was the issue. Israel was looking for the Son of God as their Messiah. This is evidenced by many verses in the Old Testament.
That Jesus Christ WAS the Son of God was the truth that was trusted in for salvation. That His name as the Son of God was Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace, and Emmanual identified him as who he was, and that is why the name was important.
Although we also believe that today, our message of salvation is that “he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”
