Romans 8:18 speaks of the suffering of this present time, which makes clear that we will suffer during this lifetime.
The common belief that God will heal us and help us solve our problems is borrowed from a different time when God was doing something special. When Christ was on earth healing the sick, giving sight to the blind, cleansing lepers and making lame men leap, he was offering Israel the promised tenets of the earthly kingdom to come. After Israel rejected their Messiah, that promise was delayed.
Instead, God began a new dispensation where there is neither Jew nor Greek, bond or free, male or female. Paul was made the Apostle of the Gentiles, and his example is quite clear:
2 Corinthians 12:7-9 And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. 8 For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. 9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
