When the reformers of the Reformation rebelled against the Roman Catholic church, they were rebelling against a very complicated system.
To gain personal, eternal salvation in the Roman church, one must confess with their mouth, be baptized, forgive others, keep the law, eat and drink Christ, and constantly confess their sins to a priest.
That is something no one is capable of doing. The reformers saw that, and saw the truth of scripture, and declared that personal, eternal salvation was a gift of God through faith alone.
